Artist Bio: 1913-1981
Virginia Dudley grew up in and around Chattanooga in the early years of the 20th century. She was educated at the University of Chattanooga in the 1930s, and studied in New York City at the Art Students League and The New School for Social Research in the1940s. She went on to earn her MFA from Claremont Graduate University in California in 1950. She and her husband established a studio, Rising Faun Enamels, on the Georgia side of Lookout Mountain which focused on the production of jewelry and decorative items in vitreous enamel on copper for retail sale. Virginia spent five years as an arts and crafts director first in the Army, and then in the Air Force, and was stationed in Korea. In 1963 she joined the faculty of Shorter College in Rome, GA and taught a variety of art and design classes until her retirement in 1971. She had 26 solo exhibitions and participated in a London exhibition commemorating Bertrand Russell. Modernism was probably the defining cultural movement of the 20th century. The art and career of Virginia Dudley demonstrates both the seductive power and pervasiveness of moderism in the visual arts. She worked in a startling variety of media: photography, printmaking, painting in oils and watercolors, ceramics, copper enameling and welding sculpture. The batik wallhanging has been donated to SNC for the Art Affair by Deanne Dudley Anglin of Clarkesville, GA and Scott and Gretchen Anglin of Sautee, GA.
